Who We Are
Albie Forestry Ltd is a family-owned business founded by husband and wife Michael and Donna Newton. What started as a timber harvesting and haulage operation has grown into a multi-faceted forestry business producing specialist timber products and our own brand of firewood briquettes — all made right here in Dumfries and Galloway.
We employ 24 people, serve customers across the UK, and have been supplying our local farming community for over 30 years. Everything we do is guided by the same principles we started with: quality, reliability, and genuine care for the people around us.
The Beginning
Michael and Donna Newton founded Albie Forestry Ltd with a focus on timber harvesting and haulage in Dumfries and Galloway.
Built from the ground up, the business quickly established a reputation for reliability and quality.
The Sawmill
A pivotal moment.
We acquired our own sawmill, transforming the business and opening up a whole new range of products — including waney edge boards and framing battens that place us in a specialist niche shared by only four other sawmills in the UK.
A New Idea Takes Shape
Michael spotted an opportunity in the wood chips produced during milling. Rather than letting a co-product go to waste, he developed a plan to dry, process, and press them into premium firewood briquettes.
The planning, investment, and building of a purpose-built facility began.
HeatBriqs is Born
After two years of development, we proudly launched HeatBriqs — locally made firewood briquettes, produced from our own mill's co-products.
Sustainable, high-performance, and made in Scotland. This milestone opened new markets and created new jobs in our community.
Growing Our Reach
This year we're pushing into e-commerce and launching a targeted marketing campaign to bring our products to a wider audience.
Our team is upskilling in digital marketing, because we believe our products deserve to be known beyond Dumfries and Galloway.
More Than a Business
Our relationship with the local farming community is one we're enormously proud of. Many farmers have relied on us for sawdust for over 30 years — a supply that's critical during winter when livestock are housed indoors.
That kind of loyalty is earned, not given. We've worked hard to be consistent, responsive, and genuinely useful to the people who depend on us. Beyond our customers, we're active in the wider community through sponsorships and donations, because a thriving Dumfries and Galloway matters to us. We live here too.

At the heart of Albie Forestry is a family. Michael and Donna are parents of four, and that shapes everything — how we treat our staff, how we serve our customers, and how we think about the future. Decisions aren't made for the next quarter; they're made for the next generation.
We're a young, energetic team that welcomes change. We've outperformed our own expectations for the past two years, and we have no intention of slowing down. If anything, we're just getting started.
The Process
Significant investment, careful planning, and thorough research have resulted in an impressive production line that delivers high-quality RUF woodchip briquettes.
Our briquettes are made from 100% wood chips with zero additives!
The chips are dried to a very low moisture level before going through the briquetting process to produce a high density briquette.
